MMC First Process signs a contract with Nova Sea for a land-based holding pen solution

September 08, 2024

MMC First Process is proud to have signed a significant contract with Nova Sea for designing and delivering holding tank systems that will allow holding pens to be moved from sea to land.

First Process has previously delivered similar systems to Bremnes Seashore and Australis. Both have achieved outstanding quality in their pre-rigor fish.

Moving holding pens ashore gives improved fish welfare and quality

This project will mean that Nova Sea can move its holding pens ashore, a decision that is driven by the desire to increase the quality of the fish. Bremnes Seashore and Australis have already demonstrated how the land-based approach can contribute to producing fish of the utmost quality, and Nova Sea expects to achieve similar results.

The role of MMC FIRST PROCESS in the project

MMC First Process will design the holding tanks, using advanced technology and experience from previous projects to ensure that all environmental parameters for the fish will be strictly controlled. This will not only improve fish welfare but will also enhance biosecurity and improve the quality of the end product.

  • “Our systems make stress-free unloading of the tanks possible and that is the key to achieving the high quality that our customers demand,” says Frank Edvard Vike, CSO Handling in MMC First Process.
  • “We have been working with Nova Sea for some time on a tailormade system, which is based on their requirements and environmental considerations. This type of collaboration also contributes to our own further development as a supplier of such systems,” he adds.
  • “From our point of view this is a big investment in new technology and with MMC First Process’s experience of similar solutions we are in safe hands,” says Espen Gleinsvåg, Nova Sea’s Project Manager.
  • “We regard this contract as an enormous vote of confidence from Nova Sea, and not least as confirmation that our technology is seen as ground-breaking in areas such as fish welfare, biomass security and product quality,” says Håvard Remøy, Head of BU Handling in MMC First Process.

Scope of the project

The project includes six holding tanks, each with a capacity of over 2600 m³ of water. These tanks are designed to handle a total biomass of 2050 tonnes of salmon. The system, which will set a new standard for Nova Sea, represents a significant investment in quality and fish welfare.

A vote of confidence in technology developed by MMC First Process

“Our collaboration with Nova Sea will reinforce our position as a leading supplier of innovative solutions to the aquaculture industry, so we have very warm feelings about this contract,” concludes Remøy.
